Dysphagia Evaluation by Using Cross-correlation coefficient of Surface Electromyography

چکیده
Swallowing disorder, also called dysphagia, is a common complication caused by strokes. The dysphagic patients usually have clinical problems such as choking, malnutrition, significant weight loss, and aspiration pneumonia. Surface electromyography(EMG) provides a simple, non-radioactive, and non-invasive method to measure the muscle activity patterns during swallowing to describe physiology of swallowing behavior. Most of previous studies described the swallowing behavior by the terms of amplitude and latency. However, there is no objective and precise approach to evaluate swallowing coordination. In order to evaluate swallowing coordination more precisely, surface EMG of bilateral muscles involving in swallowing were recorded and the cross-correlation analysis was used. The variations of the cross correlation coefficients were defined as the discoordination index (DI), which reflects the difference between the surface EMG patterns of the bilateral muscle groups. Dysphagia stroke patients and healthy subjects were recruited for sEMG recording. The result shows that the discoordination indexes for dysphagic patients were significantly larger than those for healthy subjects in submental muscles and can be used as an effective way for quantification of the coordination between bilateral swallowing muscles in future studies.

Gesture recognition method based on a single-channel sEMG envelope signal
In the past, investigators tend to use multi-channel surface electromyography (sEMG) signal acquisition devices to improve the recognition accuracy for the study of gesture recognition systems based on sEMG. The disadvantages of the method are the increased complexity and the problems such as signal crosstalk. This paper explores a gesture recognition method based on a single-channel sEMG envel...
متن کاملAn Android Application for Estimating Muscle Onset Latency using Surface EMG Signal
Background: Electromyography (EMG) signal processing and Muscle Onset Latency (MOL) are widely used in rehabilitation sciences and nerve conduction studies. The majority of existing software packages provided for estimating MOL via analyzing EMG signal are computerized, desktop based and not portable; therefore, experiments and signal analyzes using them should be completed locally. Moreover, a...
متن کاملSurface electromyography as a screening method for evaluation of dysphagia and odynophagia
OBJECTIVE Patients suspected of having swallowing disorders, could highly benefit from simple diagnostic screening before being referred to specialist evaluations. The article analyzes various instrumental methods of dysphagia assessment, introduces surface electromyography (sEMG) to carry out rapid assessment of such patients, and debates proposed suggestions for sEMG screening protocol in ord...
متن کاملEvaluation of pharyngeal muscle activity through nasopharyngeal surface electromyography in a cohort of dysphagic patients with acute ischaemic stroke
Oro-pharyngeal dysphagia is frequently present during the acute phase of stroke. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the recording of surface EMG using a nasopharyngeal (NP) electrode could be applied to evaluation of pharyngeal muscle activity in acute stroke patients and if this neurophysiological measure is related with clinical assessment of swallowing. Patients were examin...
متن کاملSwallowing Disorder in Multiple Sclerosis: Modified Version of the Screening Tool
Objective: Dysphagia is commonly encountered in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It can consequently cause severe complications such as the increased risk of dehydration, malnutrition and aspiration pneumonia that associated with an increased risk of death in the late stages of the disease. These complications can be prevented with an effective screening protocol. The Dysphagia in Multiple Sclerosis (D...
